Nature Reflection #6

I can rag on the DFW metroplex for the depressing sprawl it sometimes feels like. I get a little sad/overwhelmed when I fly into it and see endless development for miles and miles. Something about it feels different then New York, LA or Chicago when I fly in there. Maybe it could use a large body of water or something. However, there is one area that DFW stands high above any other place when it comes to natural beauty: the sunsets. I am not sure what is going on down here, but the greatest sunsets I have ever seen have all been at TCU. They aren’t common enough where you lose interest, though. Each time it happens, everyone comes out of their house to look and you see pictures all over social media. Sunsets are one of the most universal human joys. There is something wired within all of us to look at the skies in awe when it is painted a million brilliant colors. They are also very fleeting, often peaking for only 15 minutes or so. In this particular case, I was sitting downstairs playing video games when my roommate yelled “SUNSET, SUNSET, SUNSET!!” from upstairs. We all rushed up to our balcony and soaked it in for five glorious minutes. No matter what happened that day, the victories I had or the anxieties I felt, I only remember standing on the balcony with my best friends and admiring something beautiful. I also love that the best sunsets need a little bit of clouds to paint the color across the sky. On a cloudless evening, the sky gets one shade orange and fades to blue then black. There is something beautiful in how just a few clouds in the right place can take something beautiful and make it extraordinary. Every day the sun rises and every day the sun sets. The highest of highs and the lowest of lows might be sandwiched in between them, but we always have those two beautiful markers to anchor to each day. I am thankful for my time at TCU in showing the most beautiful pictures can come in places that you least expect.
